◇ Kitchen is a room of the water

Typical residence in Thailand (especially rental) doesn’t have a kitchen except of the residence for the foreigner and the rich Thai people. Some of residences have a kitchen at the balcony, but it is rare. There are the residence with swimming pool and maid room if the residence has a kitchen. And it’s high-class. I lived in the residence like that when I stayed in Bangkok for one year under a grant from Agency for Cultural Affairs in Japan.

Cooking for the meal at home isn't popular in Thailand as compared with Japan. In the home in Bangkok, meal isn’t prepared at home but food is bought in the shop and it eats at home. Kitchen might not be absolutely necessary equipment in Thailand. It also has the shop that sells food everywhere, and has the stall and the open air restaurant eaten of course in the place, and I think largeness depending on the situation of always obtaining a cheap, delicious, some food for 24 hours a day somewhere.

When seeing from the direction of the infrastructure, the city gas isn’t equipped in Thailand, and when people want to use the gas, they have to buy the gas canister of propane. Therefore, it often seems to use an electric jar, an electric rice cooker, and electric cookers such as an electric stove or electric pans -it is looked like sold by the mail order in Japan- in a general home in Bangkok.

But energy of the electric cooker isn’t strong as compared with gas cooker, so in my experience, I have to use some skill for a cooking when I cook by electric cooker. However it‘s good for cooking that be boiled for a long time, for example curry or stew. A stall is using charcoal for a cooking and some of general home is using it also. Any food is so delicious if broiled by charcoal, isn't it?

There isn't a kitchen of course in my studio but I am using a lavatory as a kitchen by force, so a kitchen is partly on a lavatory. The title of this web site “Room of the water” is direct translation from the Thai word “Hoong naam”. "Hoong" mean a room and "Naam" mean a water. So "hoong naam" mean a lavatory.

A lavatory in Thailand is usually set of a toilet and shower. At an attachment photo, toilet is behind a kitchen and a shower is more behind a toilet. Would you please try thinking about why I gave the title like that to my own web site?

I think that buying some food or eating at the cheap restaurant is cheaper than cooking myself especially in Thailand. There are a cheap restaurant and stall near a studio. A supermarket that sells some Japanese food is across from the building of a studio, and to my surprise, restaurant (it knows only resident) for a resident is opposite room from a studio. In spite of my environment about food that isn't inconvenient I want to cook myself. I think it isn't only I like to cook but also even if I like to eat Thai food, taste that got used for a long time is better. My tongue became honesty the longer I live in Thailand, the more. A taste is quite conservative isn’t it?

◇ 住まいはアトリエ_a0054925_0505244.jpg◇ Residence is Studio

I live in the Studio in Bangkok.

My Studio that was an office before is at the seventh floor of the apartment-office complex. The room is one large room and one corner is partitioned by glass door. There are two openhearted windows at the east and the north side. I felt that can use as a studio in that moment when I saw the space of the empty and white wall for the first time.

Usually there is placed the furniture, for example bed, closet, chair and table, if the room is rented in Bangkok. That is inconvenient if I want to use that as a studio.
But that room is convenient to use as a studio, because there is nothing. At the beginning, I intended to rent another room as a residence.

I bought a sofa bed, bedclothes, an electric cooker, an electric pot and two chairs at that time. Large working desk, bookshelf and temporary wall were self-made. There are no general electric products, refrigerator, television, wash machine and so on in here. I didn’t buy these things because here is a studio for works.

There are some electric products in here, one air conditioner (it’s necessary thing, isn’t it?), a radio cassette tape recorder, some floor lights (I like in a light of an incandescent lamp in the night because I use a fluorescent lamp when I work), heir drier, iron (it isn’t problem if I haven’t these two things), fax machine and lap-top computer. There are two telephone lines but I am using one.

After I bought a lap-top computer in year 2000; I came to be able to contact to Japan by e-mail and came to be able to watching a movie by DVD. In fact, I'm at a loss whether to buy a refrigerator in front of the electric appliance store sometimes, and I bought small ice-box because I also want to drink cool beverage. I usually make a beer and so on cool in that ice-box.

It is enough to live in here for the present because I have these things and I'm not only cook myself but also have a meal at the restaurant sometimes, and here is a space for painting. However it is my first experience to live in a studio so it was very hard for me at the beginning. But I’m getting used a little to live in here now.

◇ About opening my own web site.

I opened my own web site unexpectedly.

Usually I want to consider about one thing for a long time. It's my character.
So I didn't want to have own web site when my friend who managed web site asked me that "do you want to open your own web site?"

I have had interest in making my own web site, and I often get everyday information and so on by the internet(But I also think about it's dangerous to depend too much). I have felt that the computer is such a useful tool since several years ago.

But it is different about my own web site. I worried that if I can’t make good one, and I asked me "is that really necessary for me?"
"Do I really have something which I want to make it?" I was very serious by my character at that time. But I wanted to think about that more easily. I could not do like that. It was also by my character.

It wasn’t by dramatic reason when I decided to make my own web site.
I think It was only "Time was ripe” It is a feeling exaggerated a little. In fact, it’s a feeling like “Anyway let's try!”

I wanted to make it simple design and composition, and I told to my friend my idea. At last, my web site was completed by his perfect cooperation.

I'll try to write my feelings that I felt in my everyday life. I hope that I can write this web log same like to talk to a close person. I have thought about "Meal" can make my existence or influences a great deal that origin for a long time, so I gave the titled "Meal" to this web log. I like to eat and interested in cooking (whether it can be called cooking). After all, I think that "everyday meal” is one of the elements of which my paintings is exist. I really think so.

It might not be understood well in the beginning, and I think that can’t up-date very often. But I wish someone feel something else by keeping on writing for a long time. I'll attach photographs too, so please enjoy it lightheartedly.

Anyway I'll try to begin!
